The anterior compartment of the lower leg consists of 4 muscles; tibialis anterior, extensor digitorum longus, extensor digitorum brevis and extensor digitorum longus.

The primary function of this group of muscles is to dorsiflex the foot or to bring your toes toward the shin. If you participate in a sports such as soccer, long distance running, cycling or skating of any sort you may know what shin splints feel like. Shin pain or Anterior compartment syndrome can be prevented and even reversed by treating these four muscles.
